Note the mp symbol at the beginning of the music. This is a dynamic marking. It provides guidance on the dynamics with which the piece should be played. In this instance, it indicates that it should be played with a moderately quiet dynamic. There are two additional signs: < meaning get gradually louder, and > meaning get gradually quieter. Listen to the audio example to hear how this sounds.

Another dance in 3/4 time is the minuet. This dance is found frequently in the music of Baroque composers such as J. S. Bach and Handel. It continued to be popular well into the Classical Period. The minuet featured below is by Johann Sebastian Bach. It includes a new note: the quaver. Quavers are worth half the length of a crotchet. Example 5h shows the C Major scale using quaver beats. Because quaver notes are half the length of crotchets, there are two notes to every beat making the music sound quicker.
